Mexico's goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa put on the defensive display of the World Cup on Tuesday with a stunning six-save performance during a 0-0 draw with Brazil. No matter what the home side threw at him, “Memo” denied them all afternoon, with Photoshops of him as a saint as well as the Christ the Redeemer statue popping up and going viral soon after.
One bit of information about Ochoa came out during the game and seemed to explain his performance as he helped keep Mexico's hopes of advancing out of Group A alive.
That Tweet, which was a hoax, went viral, fooling a number of outlets.
Sure, having an extra digit would help parry some of those saves away, but sadly, Ochoa is not theAntonio Alfonseca of soccer; he does not have an extra finger on his right hand, as he displayed to the crowd at Estádio Castelão.
The rumor originally surfaced in 2010 when Ochoa was linked with Barclays Premier League side Fulham for a trial. The move never materialized and suddenly "news" that the English FA blocked the trial due to Ochoa's "extra finger" began to spread.
So Ochoa's performance versus Brazil wasn't helped in part because of an extra finger, he was just that good.
